As an RPG fan and a 40k fan, when a mate of mine decided to run some Dark Heresy campaigns I was thrilled. But as it turns out it just isn't. fun. Being railroaded into being (basically) a member of the Inquisition (well not technically but under the employ of one) sort of pigeonholes what the GM can do in terms of plot, and what the players can do in general. My general dislike for d100 systems notwithstanding, Dark Heresy just has a lot of general issues that rankled me - our party spent week..more

This is a pretty spectacularly good game. The Warhammer 40K universe has always interested me, spending hundreds of dollars on miniatures I don't have the talent, time or patience to paint.. less so. So a role-playing game was perfect for me, and having played it, I can say that the system is pretty clear, perfect for evoking the bordering-on-parody but still effective darkness of the dark future of the Warhammer universe.
The game uses 'careers' which are essentially classes, and it's a little

This forms the core around which some half dozen WH40k roleplaying games would later spread, a font from which it all began.. well, it itself took most of it from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, but who's counting.
The system is solid enough, but it has not aged very well. I find that the second edition has improved the rules more often than not.

I really like the 40K universe and I 've heard great stuff about the system (based on WHFRPG) and was hyped to run a mini campaign. But the book killed that hype in a big way.
I disliked the way the book was organised: it floods you with numbers and wxplains how those numbers work 100 pages afterwards. It is too rules heavy without highlighting their unifying mechanics and that makes them seem a bit arbitrary. It is brutal and unforgiving at combat but is also made as a combat heavy game, because

I translated this book into Italian for Giochi Uniti Spa. Even though I loved the task, I cannot say the editing of the book was well crafted. For the Italian edition we had to work a lot to straighten all the mistakes made by the original editors.
I love though when I go to stores and see people buying the book, knowing they'll play using my translation!

Another Warhammer 40K game.
In this one you play minions to a Inquisitor, not part of his or her retinue or party. No, you are a faceless drone that is part of their network, looking into things on their behalf, usually without any other backup than the rest of the player party. So expect death tolls to be high.
The game has a high investigation focus, but as always there is also a high action and combat focus as well. But horror is right up there, for you will stumble upon things waaaay above yo

If you're a fan of 40K or find other RPG settings are growing a little old, I think you'll have fun with DH.
I am having _so much fun_. A friend is running a DH campaign, unsurprisingly I've opted to join the ranks of the Adeptus Mechanicus ;-) Cyberpunk 2020 is still my favourite setting (and Traveller and Paranoia second and third) but DH is giving them a run for their money.
Character creation is pretty straightforward, although if this is your first RPG you'll really want someone else to work

This is thus far my favorite tabletop RPG, and still my most played. It is sad to say that my rulebook is now lost, and the game is out of print. I have so many memories of this game with friends, from the moment I got lucky on a roll in character creation and became an Imperial Guardsmen, to the day one of my companions lit him on fire and the rest stomped out my character's flaming body. He never did like fire after that.
A Role-playing book about a dystopian futur (warhammer 40k). A beautiful book oozing the grimness, grandeur and madness of the setting. The system seems well balanced and representative of the setting.

First rulebook for the 40k rpg. While I'm not a fan of the setting I do think that the rules are decent.
I've not been taken by an RPG in a long time. This one has very much captured my imagination and I really am impressed with the quality & direction of this game.

One of my fave games and settings, Dark Heresy 1st Ed is a wild ride of awesomeness. While there is a second edition out (and another while new game in Wrath & Glory), both of 1st Ed’s successors lack the satire, dark humor, and wildness that makes Dark Heresy great. It’s just more fun than the later game.
It does lose a star though as the system is definitely showing its age. There are a ton of redundant skills and talents that seemingly do nothing. Still, the system does work pretty well.

Dark Heresy is a role-playing game published by Black Industries in 2008 that uses the Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay system. A second edition was published in 2014 under Fantasy Flight Games.[1]

  • 1Description

Description[edit]

In Dark Heresy, the player characters are agents of the Inquisition.

Gameplay[edit]

The players assume the role of a group of Acolytes working for an Inquisitor, who sends them on various missions. Depending on the type of mission, the gameplay can involve investigation, combat, intrigue, or a number of other genres. Therefore, the Game Master can tailor his campaign to suit his player group. As the players work for an Inquisitor, most missions involve rooting out heresies or matters relating to them, but the breadth of the game allows for many other missions, including wiping out dangerous gangs, gathering evidence of corruption, dealing with alien threats or eliminating rogue psykers.[2]

Career paths[edit]

Each player can pick a career path for his character, which is similar to a class from other RPG systems such as D&D. There are 8 career paths in the core rulebook, and more added in several sourcebooks. They are:

Warhammer 40k Dark Heresy Pdf

  • Adept - A career path devoted to knowledge, logic, and analysis, though they are not very effective in combat and not always good in social interaction.[3]
  • Arbitrator - Members of the Adeptus Arbites, the elite Imperial Law upholding organisation, are effective both in investigative skills and combat.[4]
  • Assassin - These skilled killers excel in both combat and stealth skills.[5]
  • Cleric - Clergy of the Ecclesiarchy train in a wide range of abilities, but excel at motivation and leadership.[6]
  • Guardsman - Although the name of this class usually brings to mind members of the Imperial Guard, it also applies to mercenaries and other soldiers; they are skilled warriors who can also operate vehicles.[7]
  • Imperial Psyker - This class represents an individual with psychic powers, able to channel the warp to accomplish a wide variety of things.[8]
  • Scum - Criminals, outcasts, thieves, and other miscreants, this class of rogues has a variety of useful skills involving stealth, infiltration and social interaction with less-honest members of Imperial society.[9]
  • Tech-Priest - Skilled with machines and technology, they are members of the Cult Mechanicus.[10]
  • Adepta Sororitas - Commonly known as the Sisters of Battle, this career path was introduced in the Inquisitor's Handbook and is recommended for veteran players due to the roleplaying challenges involved. While superficially similar to clerics, they are even more rigid in their mindset and can perform faith talents.[11]
  • Battle Sisters - This new career is added in Blood of Martyrs, it differs from the Adepta Sororitas as income has been modified and it allows characters to start with the common Sister of Battle weapons and armour.
  • Grey Knight - this new career is added in Daemon Hunter, and is recommended for veteran players. It looks like a compromise variant for Dark Heresy-Deathwatch crossover.

On 28 January 2008, Games Workshop announced that it would close Black Industries - thereby discontinuing Dark Heresy and all the other games published by the subsidiary - to allow them to focus on the commercial success of their novels and core business.[16]

On 22 February 2008, Black Industries announced that all Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 RPG, CCG, and select board game rights were being transferred to Fantasy Flight Games, who would continue to publish Dark Heresy.[17]

During late 2008 and 2009, Fantasy Flight started releasing autonomously-developed material for the Dark Heresy game: a collection of heretical factions to pit the player characters against titled Disciples of the Dark Gods, a monster manual called Creatures Anathema, and a mini-campaign in three parts dubbed The Haarlock Legacy.

Fantasy Flight also announced a manual on 'radical' inquisitors (covering the most extreme factions, their tactics, equipment, and most prominent figures) and a major expansion allowing players to take their characters to the rank of interrogator, bestowed with an inquisitorial rosette, enjoying augmented prestige and able to summon more powerful allies.

On 9 September 2016 Fantasy Flight announced they would be ending their relationship with Games Workshop from 28 February 2017 for all shared products including Dark Heresy.[18]
